Race Name: Utini (Utini is the plural)
Homeworld: SRYY 45-B
Religions: folk
Main Cities: Eltho, Miksa
Dominant Species: Mites, Utini

Biology & Diet
Utini are pure mammalian avians of more or less humanoid physiology. They are easily identified by their large wing membranes, which are clearly evolved from a five-fingered hand structure. Two of the Utini's digits function to manipulate their wing membrane, with a third support spine extending from the ulna for flight stabilization. This leaves two functioning humanoid fingers and a thumb on the Utini hand.

The bones of the Utini are light, allowing them to take off from the ground, though most prefer to fly from a slight height. The Utini's flat tail aids them in flying, and it is speculated the mane of shaggy warm-coloured hair along their back allows them to better sense minute changes in wind currents. The large feet of Utini are flattened for landing on sand beaches and other smoothed, flat surfaces.

Utini faces are visually flat, owing to the fact that they have no protruding nasal cartilage. Their nostrils are flat to their faces, and slitted, able to be closed at will against strong wind currents or atmospheric irritants. Another notable feature of Utini faces is their ears, located below the eye level and slightly above the jawline. It is supposed this evolved in order to aid the species in hearing sounds below them during flight.

Utini are omnivorous, but vastly prefer meat in their diet to vegetables. As they live largely by the seaside, they acquire most of their protein and fat needs from fish or other sea creatures.

Sexual Dimorphism & Reproduction
Unlike their cousins, the Mites, the Utini do not share a fur or skin-tone linked sexual dimorphism. A primarily binary sexed species, both males and females share the same fair skintones.

There are, however, other differences. Though similar in height, and both sharing a build of athletic upper-body strength, female Utini posses the Human-like secondary sex characteristic of visible mammaries year-round. Their hips are slightly larger for birthing young, and facial structure softer than their square-faced male counterparts. Behaviorally, males tend to be more reserved, and females more outgoing.

Utini reproduction is similar to that of most mammals. The female will carry the developing young for approximately 9 months, before giving birth to one child at a time. The young Utini look similar to their parents, though it takes several weeks for their mane to develop and darken in colour.

At age two, the young typically begin to learn to fly.

The Utini family unit is typically two parents and one child, though after the child is grown the parents may split. It is believed by Utini that offspring require two adults to develop (though this, biologically, does not appear to be true) and so occasionally family units can be more of a business partnership than a source of affection.

Language & Culture
The Utini language shares the same origin roots as the Mite language, and though the two share some words, it has developed its own syntax and grammar. Making use of patterned syllables, the written version of Utini language is a series of complex lines, loops and brush strokes developed by use of ink and brushes.

Utini are extremely adept and advanced tool users, using tools for almost every aspect of life. Tools for building, fishing, communicating and travel are common.

Dwelling in groups, Utini have formed numerous cities, suburbs and towns along the coasts of SRYY-45B. Utini dwellings are typically elevated, built on stilts to avoid the incoming rush of tide and to aid in the initiation of flight. Everything about Utini biology suggests that coast side life is ideal for the species, and yet they feel a sense of territorial animosity towards their Mite cousins.

The feud between Utini and Mites has lasted as long as their mutual documented histories, and is a large part of the Utini cultural identity. Utini believe that in some way they have been pushed out of the grasslands and lava flow areas, where flight thermals are preferable. This competition for territory lead directly to the near-extinction of both species.

Religion & Rulerism
Utini are not overly religious, and mostly seem to follow old Folk traditions out of habit than out of devotion or belief. They enjoy the ritual and holidays, and feel that their lack of belief or faith in these religions actually frees them to enjoy the pageantry more.

Many Utini religious holidays involve an exchange of gifts, though some also involve beach side bonfires, copious drinking, and recreations of great battles fought between themselves and the Mites.

There are no strong associations between Rulerists and Utini. Though Utini harbor resentment towards the Rulerist fleets for enforcing their planetary quarantine, they are not adverse to employment within Rulerist-tied operations. Considering how rare the Utini now are outside of SRYY-45 B, it is more apt to consider them neutral on the subject of Rulerism in general.

Technology & Alien Cultures
While Utini can not claim any galactic breakthroughs, they did develop their own methods of space travel in a space-race with the Mites. This resulted in a few Utini leaving their homeworld and exploring space under their own power.

Apart from their deep cultural dislike of their cousins, Utini attempted a historic partnership with the Rogers - which was subsequently rejected. The specifics of this rejection are unknown, but it is worth noting that the Utini withdrew their offer for partnership before the Rogers did.
